Office Procedures
Pre-Procedure Instructions
Prior to your Surgery
Avoid the following medications TEN (10) days prior to your surgery:
- Aspirin or aspirin products – Alka Seltzer, Ascriptin, BC, Bufferin, Ecotrin, Excedrin or Goodies Powder
- Blood Thinners – Coumadin
- Arthritis medicine, ibuprofens or anti-inflammatory – Advil, Aleve, Anaprox, Celebrex, Daypro, Idocin, Lodine, Meclofen, Methotrexate, Motrin, Naprosyn, Naproxen, Nuprin, Orudis, Relafen, Rimadyl, Tolectin, Toradol, Vioxx, Bextra, or Voltaren
- Your actual medication may not be listed, but your pharmacist can tell you if any of your medicine is in the above categories.
After Care (Adult)
Cystoscopy Stent Removal
It is normal to have some discomfort after your procedure. You may notice some blood in your urine. Please drink a lot of fluids and usually this will go away in a few hours.
You may take Tylenol as directed for any discomfort.
If you have a fever over 101 degrees, call the office at (256) 536-9020 and follow the directions given.
Prostate Biopsy / Goldmarkers
Please abstain from intercourse until your next appointment in one week. You may experience bleeding in three areas. It is normal to have blood in your urine and bowel movements for about 3 days. Your semen / ejaculation may be off color for a couple of months. Do not lift heavy objects until your urine is absent of blood (usually two days). You may take Tylenol as directed for any discomfort.
If you have a fever over 101 degrees, call the office at (256) 536-9020 and follow the directions given.
Catheter Removal
It is normal to notice blood in your urine. You should increase your fluids in order to decrease clots from forming. If you experience problems voiding, call the office for an immediate appointment. If it is after normal business hours, please go to the nearest Emergency Room and call us on the next business day to inform us of your ER visit.
Catheter Insertion
It is normal to notice blood in your urine. You should increase fluids in order to decrease clots from forming. Please have all your prescriptions filled that your doctor has given you today. Sometimes bladder spasms can occur and urine can leak around the tubing. Empty the urine from the bag and monitor urine flow into the urinary drainage bag. If the bag fails to fill with urine, call the office and follow the directions given.
Vasectomy
NO lifting or intercourse for seven days. Wear a jock strap 24 hours a day for seven days. For the first 2 days, lay flat and apply ice to scrotum a minimum of 20 minutes each waking hour. On day 3, take it easy. On day 4, you may shower and return to work.
If you experience a fever of 101, have a sudden and severe swelling, or your pain meds are not working, call the office at (256) 536-9020. You must use birth control until a semen analysis in 3 months indicates “NO SPERM SEEN”.
After Care (Children) Meatotomy
Child may resume regular activities and baths. Apply Neosporin as directed per doctor. Small amount of bleeding is expected. Tylenol can be used for discomfort. No more bubble baths!
Lysis of Adhesion (male)
Child may resume regular activities and baths. Apply Neosporin ointment as directed per doctor. Tylenol can be used for discomfort. Small amount of bleeding is expected.
Lysis of Adhesion (female)
Child may resume regular activities and baths. Apply Neosporin ointment as directed per doctor. Tylenol can be used for discomfort.Small amount of bleeding is expected. No more bubble baths!
Circumcision
Remove the Vaseline gauze in the next 24 hours. Cleanse soiled penis with a cotton ball dampened with water. DO NOT USE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE. Apply Neosporin Ointment (not cream) to penis with each diaper change.
Sponge baths are given for the first four days after the circumcision. After four days, regular baths may be given.
Mild pressure may be applied for external bleeding for 10-15 minutes.
Call the office if there is a significant swelling, bleeding, or fever over 101 degrees.
